Processing Grief

The year 2020 has not been easy for most of us. Many of us are grieving loss. Here are just a few practical tips on how to do that.

First, seek support from people who care about you, will listen to your story and not offer pat answers or platitudes – preferably someone who has experienced a similar loss though this is not absolutely necessary.

Second, exercise as you are able. Thirty to forty five minutes of aerobic exercise 4 times a week (or more, if able) will be helpful.

Third, do some journaling. Writing down thoughts and feelings (as well as prayers to God) can get it “out of our heads” and onto paper can give some people some needed headspace. Writing prayers out is actually prayer so it can put us in position to receive from God.

Fourth, give yourself permission to be “off” for awhile. Grief is a normal and natural response to loss. It touches every part of our being (body, soul and spirit) and can impact every area of our lives. Energy and concentration can be impacted and it is unrealistic and unfair to assume one will go on as if nothing has happened. Understand there is no one timetable. Grief is a very individualized processes so folks will move through it in their own way.
