Self Harm

Sadly, rates of suicide and self-harm are on the rise.  At Maranatha Family Counseling we are committed to approaching these struggles with great care.

First, we want to be clear that if you or anyone you know is experiencing a life-threatening emergency, immediately call 911.  If someone is not currently in danger but expressing thoughts of self-harm (such as cutting or suicide) reach out to us or other professionals for help as soon as possible.  Those in the greater Dayton area can call the 24/7 hotline at Samaritan CrisisCare at 937-224-4646. The 24 hour National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is 1-800-273-8255.

Our first goal for a client struggling with cutting, suicidal thoughts, or another type of self-harm is to assess the levels of risk, and to create a Safety Plan and Contract.  The results of the assessments will determine how we proceed with treatment.

Clients who feel unsafe need a collaborative treatment approach with multiple people and professionals.  Consequently, we may involve their family members, and may recommend a metal health hospital or more intensive treatment.  If the client is under 18-years-old, we will always involve a parent or guardian in their safety planning process.

After we get our clients emotionally stable, we proceed with exploring and challenging underlying emotions that lead to self-harm urges.
