Eating Disorders

Sadly, people sometimes excessively worry about what they can eat and avoid food. Others overeat as a way to cope with difficult emotions or self-soothe.

We approach eating struggles from the perspective that we are created in the image of God and should care for our bodies. We also explore heart issues behind eating disorders which often include a need for control, fearing the opinions of others, or misguided thoughts about self and God. We encourage clients to see themselves how God sees them – worthy to be loved.

Depending on the clients’ initial appointments, we sometimes address safety concerns before continuing treatment. For instance, we frequently ask eating disorder clients to meet with a doctor and a dietitian as they receive counseling from us. We have a dietician as a member of our practice (Sarah Kittle) so we can closely collaborate about patient care.

We may also recommend those experiencing more severe symptoms, to get more intensive treatment than we can provide at Maranatha Family Counseling.
