Special Needs

People with special needs may require additional support to function in a world that is often confusing to them. We believe they are heroes at Maranatha Family Counseling. Our goal is to offer practical help as we point them to the goodness of their Creator and Savoir of their souls.

Our staff has years of experience working with people with intellectual challenges such as Autism, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), and various types of learning disabilities. We work hard to address the unique challenges our special needs clients have, as we help them realize success. We adjust our counseling to fit individuals’ needs, but there are normally three key components to our treatment approach for special needs clients.

Self-awareness

Everyday tasks are often more difficult for them than others. People with intellectual struggles deal with low self-esteem and low confidence. We address these feelings by helping them to accept and understand who they are.  At MFC, we put a lot of effort into helping our special needs clients to identify, celebrate, and practice their God-given strengths.

Mood-regulation

Depression and anxiety can be bi-products of having special needs. We help clients learn ways to regulate their mood, and we invite them to find peace in the goodness of their Creator, God.

Collaboration

People with special needs do best with a supportive community, therefore, we involve families and school staff in the treatment process. With the clients’ permission, we collaborate with their school staff about treatment goals and educational needs, so that everyone involved is working together as much as possible.
